Sherwood Aviation started from humble beginnings as Sherwood Avionics & Accessories in Miami, Florida. Founder, Ben Farrell, had worked in the aerospace industry for over 20 years, beginning his tenured aerospace career at Rolls-Royce as a Gas Turbine Engineer. He then moved on to the airline industry - Air Canada, Braniff Airways, Air Florida, and Midway Airlines - setting up their component repair shops while maintaining the aircraft fleets, no matter where in the world they required troubleshooting and maintenance. After the collapse of Midway Airlines, Ben turned to founding Sherwood in May of 1992 for more stability and time home with family. Using the skills and knowledge he’d gained from his years of experience, backed by the support of his family, Sherwood Avionics & Accessories was forged into existence.
Shortly after opening the doors, Sherwood was issued their FAA Air Agency Certificate to begin repairing aircraft components, followed by EASA certification in 1999. In 2003, Sherwood completed the acquisition of a Doral, Florida-based accessory shop, taking over the assets and larger facility to expand component capabilities for both commercial and defense applications. After achieving ISO 9000 certification and outgrowing the Doral facility, Sherwood purchased their current 35,000-square-foot, Opa-Locka, Florida facility in 2010. The new facility allowed for rapid expansion and growth, supporting new capability development and the addition of new segments, including engineering and product sales. With growth came new opportunities – and a new name. Sherwood Aviation entered into agreements and partnerships with several OEMs and industry-forerunners. In 2013, they became the first Honeywell Defense & Space Authorized Service Center for APUs and Mechanical Components in the Americas.
Laser-focused on continued growth, Sherwood added a new manufacturing segment to the business, simultaneously achieving the latest AS9100/ISO 9000 certifications. In 2019, complementing the business strategy and existing relationship, Sherwood inked a new World-Wide Distribution Agreement with Honeywell Defense & Space as one of only 3 exclusive distributors. With the expansion of manufacturing and distribution, Sherwood completed the acquisition of an adjacent facility, adding an additional 35,000 square feet to the, now 2.3-acre campus, totaling approximately 70,000 climate-controlled square feet.
Today, Sherwood Aviation remains a customer-focused solutions provider, supporting customers in over 80 countries, with national sales offices and a global rep network. Their Opa-Locka, Florida headquarters is home to nearly 40,000 in-house repair capabilities, 500,000 stock items, and a growing copyright, trademark, and patent portfolio. While Sherwood has seen substantial growth since inception, they remain a family oriented and operated business that take great pride in every aspect of their operation.
